Welcome to the future of gaming audio with Turtle Beach Elite. Powerful sound, abundant comfort and dynamic function combine to exceed your wildest expectations with the Turtle Beach Elite 800X. Uncompromising, the Elite 800X is the ultimate in completely wireless (watch the video!) Xbox One noise cancelling (watch the video!), surround sound gaming audio with DTS Headphone:X 7.1 Channel Surround Sound (watch the video!) and DTS Surround Sound modes that further enhance your games, music and movies. The long-lasting rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of use while Bluetooth keeps you connected with your mobile devices.
Both the transmitter (base stand) and the headset itself feel like the best quality Turtle Beach have produced yet, and that’s some statement as the 500X was fantastic quality.
The trick here seems to be simplicity though, normally it gets more complicated which breaks things or makes them flimsy but the Elite 800X avoids all the issues here.
I’ll elaborate though as the base unit has a light at the front, a pairing button at the back, a micro USB connector and optical in and out THAT’S IT! It’s just a simple stand the headset sits in nice and securely thanks to the magnet hidden in the charging transmitter.
The headset itself is also really simple yet maintains all the features of a modern gaming headset (and mobile in this case) that you would expect: adjustable headband length, spinning cups and pivots on the cups for perfect comfort (that need breaking in for a little while otherwise prolonged use may hurt a little)
The padding hidden in the headband is leather and really nice to wear, the cup padding is also leather and as a real quality feel to it. Shaped the same as the full earpiece as well it also looks great.
The simple cover plate also appeals as there are no awkward buttons to navigate it’s just up,down, side to side or hold to activate in some cases. Again less to go wrong so it’s a big thumbs up on the build quality.

Value for money:
Well as the most expensive headset now available officially for the Xbox One you had better get saving those pennies. Ranging from £215 to £249 (at time of writing) this is a bank buster and this is the grey area of the review. Does it offer value for money if you purchased the 500X no not really the features have improved for sure but if it’s a gaming headset you require stay put.
Many features on the recent X07 PRO also match the Elite 800X so should you upgrade……. HELL YES! That pesky wire and stereo sound on the X07 PRO is nice but even from a veteran user of the 500X the 800X is a huge improvement on quality and not just in overall effect, the bass is better and the wide variety of available effect to choose from is ever-growing and ever improving. Add to that the best feature in the full wireless and there is no reason Ebay shouldn’t be flooded with X07’s and Amazon Sold out of 800X tomorrow.
The rest of the world though it’s really a matter of simple opinion, if you can afford these amazing headphones then yes its value for money and worth it, but if you’re saving up for 6 months and going without food then no you’re going to say they are overpriced, facts are though for all the cool features being added to Turtle Beach headsets each release they just get better and better so yeah wait a year and a new and improved one will be released, but isn’t this just the technological world we live in today?
For the quality of sound and as I mentioned earlier I am a big fan and user of the 500X the sound is amazing. Having spoken with fellow owners of the 800X they too found the quality to be greatly improved, mainly due to the better low-end tones offered by the Elite 800X.
Add to this the ease of changing presets now via your mobile device (requires appropriate Android or IPhone free download) and there is no beating this headset. And one of my big gripes from earlier headsets was the pre sets that had to be memorised, well now a kind young lady says what you have just done in your ear. Great addition to the headset as if you pressed the wrong button, you’re going to know about it, and if you could not remember the setting you’re on or changing to then again you are being informed.
And for the one piece we have all been waiting for the new hidden microphones, built into the lower part of the earpiece no more annoying boom mic picking up your whole room sounds and movements just you and your game. Well that’s how it’s supposed to be. It would seem the headset has shipped with a Xbox and Turtle beach coding issue of sorts as there have been a large number of reports surrounding what can only be described as goldfish syndrome. Now those of you also lucky enough to have had the 500X might remember a similar issue around the launch period, well it seems history repeats itself again.
Now take away your Xbox and the mics work amazingly well, I ran a 1 hour test whilst driving to work with the headphones on (yes that’s what I was doing if anyone saw me) testing the bluetooth and mobile features of the Elite 800X. Each caller gave the exact same feedback, no car or road noise you sound clear as if you were talking through your phone. So it would seem that the headphones perform exactly as stated until they are connected to the Xbox then you clearly stick a goldfish bowl over your head.
Other primary features include the noise cancellation and mic monitoring well you can’t have it both ways, if you don’t want to hear anything around you then turn on the noise cancellation and it works fantastically well, but if you want to hear your voice then mic monitoring is the setting you desire, I have to admit I have become accustomed to the mic monitoring and personally I find it helpful to hear my other surroundings you know in case someone is screaming FIRE FIRE.
Then there is the bluetooth mentioned earlier, not only can you use these with your mobile and stop those wires getting tangled up in your coat or jumper but you can have your phone paired during gaming receive calls as well as use the companion app to make changes to your sounds. The great part about this is your game sound is lowered not muted so you can literally do two things at once, game and chat (unheard of I know) And the long battery life makes it even better.
The weight would be many people’s concern as there are batteries and so many features included and quality means heavy to some people well no more, the Elite 800X only weighs 370g
so just a fraction under the 500X
